going out of watershed

August 9th, 2010 § 0

Every year we go downeast at least once to Cobscook. We have been doing this for many years and each year we explore a new part of the territory. Physically coastal Washington County is still so close to the way it was ten thousand years ago that it always cuts through the garbage in my life and does me some primal good. This year we poked down paths on the bold coast as well as languishing in our glorious site in the state park. Who could ask for more?

Within each watershed are layers of time, of story, of place; configurations of wetlands, manmade and ancient, beavers dams and hydro dams, ponds and streams, pools and rivers, run off and farmland irrigation, pumps, dams, and species in abundance, species endangered or scarce, graveyards, skeletons of mills , farmsteads, and bridges,  native plants and invasive ones, lilacs and cat tails, purple loosestrife and nasty milfoil.

Becoming 64

June 4th, 2010 § 0

Wednesday morning at 6:12 am I became 64 years old. I was standing on the dock at Daicey Pond looking toward an invisible Katahdin peak in Baxter State Park.

This is a group of illustrations that I  lifted  from an old chart in a pamphlet about the glacial history of  Baxter State Park and a group of frog metamorphosis images from an old textbook. The reason I bring up the appropriation  is that I love these little drawings and I want to use them as part of a new lexicon* I am developing. I am trying to decide what my responsibilities are,  both moral and legal, to the original illustrator. I do plan on offering these images for sale as postcards eventually but for now I am just airing them out.
